In the lead up to holiday season (and at any time of year really) superfoods are a great way to combat toxin buildup from alcohol and less-than-ideal food choices (cue… greasy party food!). Today’s morning smoothie is a pick-me-up to counter yesterday’s beer-and-chips fuelled Christmas drinks at work. (Yes, a Health Coach like me does enjoy beer AND chips.) It’s not a life of deprivation! It’s about knowing what our limits are (for me, it’s 2-3 beers) and how to take care of ourselves.
Back to superfoods
Today’s morning smoothie superfoods are:
Acai Berry – Acai Berries are ultra-high in energy-boosting and anti-inflammatory antioxidants, fiber, and heart-healthy fats. They are a fantastic addition to smoothies, muesli bowls, and baking. I buy mine at the health food store near me but you can check out many online sources as well. One acai berry also contains more protein than 1 egg. Say super again!
VitalGreens – I LOVE this green powder! As much as we all want to, it really is a challenge sometimes to eat the required amount of fruit and vegetables. What I love about VitalGreens is that it is a food-based supplement, meaning it’s the actual nutritious food, just ground up and freeze dried into a great-tasting powder in absorbable form. It’s packed with 76 different veggies, fruit, herbs and probitiocs. I either take Vital Greens with water, or add it to smoothies.
Hemp Seeds – are a fantastic source of protein and healthy fats! These babies have all the 9 essential amino acids. These are about 30% essential fatty acids and 25% protein! 2 Tbsp delivers 7-8 grams of very absorbable, clean protein. What’s not to love?
Today’s smoothie was so energising and cleansing, and I feel so much better now after starting the day with half a lemon in warm water, then this smoothie 15-20 mins after. This recipe was today’s blend, but feel inspired to make your own smoothie alchemy
Ingredients:
2 big handfuls of lettuce (use any greens you have)
1 cheek mango, cubed
1/2 banana
1 handful almonds
2 Tbsp hemp seeds
1 Acai Berry frozen smoothie pack (100 g) >> You may find powder versions as well
enough filtered water to cover the ingredients
Make It!
Add all ingredients to blender and blend away!
Should be ready in 15-30 seconds depending on your blender’s motor. Add more water if it’s too dry.
